I'm Rodolfo. I'm a brazilian webdesigner, and I have been studied some techniques of SEO, for promoting my own website and you know... Get clients. I'll do my best teaching you guys that.
First of all, we should know that there are two types of Digital Marketing: Black Hat and White Hat. You just need to know that anything that is abusive or any easy method to get ranked on Google search engines, might be Black Hat, and this soon or later will make the website that your are working on be punished by loosing all the hard job You made. So I recommend You to only use the techniques I will list below, for beggining, and CERTAINLY You will get good (not perfect) positioning.
1) Use a CMS: I recomend JOOMLA or WordPress. They help you a lot in the construction of the website and with the marketing job. And also, it is responsive, is that, optimized for using on mobile devices.
2) Plan the content you will write about: You shall make good and small texts. The information must be clear for your users can get it easily.
3) Make all your content thinking about web search: This is the most important part!
a) Yes, you have to plan everything You will write, since from the beggining: Choose carefully the key-words you will use. I recomend you to choose those that have less competitivity. For example: You should prefer words that are searched 3 times a day, but has low competition than words that are searched 100 times but already has a dozen of websites/blogs fighting for it. You can use Google Analytics or similar to get this.
Ex: Put key-words in every text of every page of your website, specially on the Main Page, but be careful! You could be abusive and do Black Hat, and then get punished. And your content would not be good for your visitors, and They could leave your website.
b)Write your titles and sub-titles using the HTML tags
: And every time that is possible, use the tag too. Google will see your content as relevant. And do not forget, that put key-words on the titles and sub-titles is indispensable.
c) NEVER get content from another websites: You will be saw as a spammer because of the duplicated content if you don't produce your own texts. Be original.
d) Keep in mind that your texts must be low: Yeah, yeah... It isn't easy, but write just the necessary, for your page load quickly and the appearance be beautiful. No one will stay sitting there for even five minutes reading lots of text.
4) Keywords on the Title Bar: That is very important! Because by doing this, your website/blog, could be tracked by the Google bots. Some people say, you should not exceed 60 words, but that is a lie. Put all synonymous words You can think about, and do not repeat it on the other pages, change some words on this or that page.
5) Images: This is a veeery important tip.
a) Your images must have good quality and express exactly what You want to. The information must be as clear as possible.
b) The name of all your images must have the key-words your website is trying to ranking.
Ex: Your website/blog is about family relationship. Your images must be named by "family-relationship" "how-to-have-a-good-relationship-with-my-family" and similar. The words shall be lowercase and be separated by hyphen, or else, Google won't get it.

c) Fill the atributes and of all your images. This will help Google to find the images on your website/blog.
6) Make internal links: Your pages must point between them. And here we go with some cares.
a) First of all, do not be abusive.
b) Do not make deep linked pages, put all your pages linked by the main page. Deep linked pages are not accessible by the Google spiders.
Ex: www.yoursite.com/index.php/paste/our-job/projects/our-best-works/top-10/top-10.php is a terrible URL for Google search engine.
7) Make a sitemap for your website and submit it for the Host: Your sitemap tells Google how to track the pages You are showing it. How to "walk" through your pages.
8) Make a robots.txt file: The robots.txt is extremely important for the web crawlers. Submit it to your host too. Don`t forget of grant permission for your CSS and Image files. It will help a lot.
9) Constantily update your pages: Everytime You change your content, You're telling to Google "Hey, look at me, I'm important".
10) Creat an account on Google Webmasters: There are a lot of useful resources They will provide to You. They will tell You everithing that is going wrong with your website, so You can fix it. They have a forum too, They are awesome on answering, very quick and accurate.
11) Put description and key-words on every page: If you are using a CMS (or even not), You must put key-words on every page and description too. Fill your description with the key-words You're trying to get ranked.
12) Create backlinks: Be sure all the previous steps were accurately followed and go to create backlinks. You can do it through many ways.
a) Social Networks: It is indispensable. Create fan pages and follow the same key-words tactics you did before. Make a good and clear content, and update your social networks 2 or 3 times for week. Invite your friends for like it, and spend some money, especially on the Facebook campaigns. It's not expensive, don't worry, You will certainly get good results.
b) Backlinks through blogs and websites: You can create your own blog and make relevant content, and link it in your website (if you have one).
c) Get partners: Ask your friends for put a link of your website/blog on their websites/blogs.
d) Comment another websites: Search for websites that is related to yours, choose a post and comment it. Spent some hours doing it. Some blogs/websites have in their comment section, an area where you can put your name AND website, and there is the treasure! Because your name will be linked to the page you want to get visited. You can also put your name as the keywords you're trying to get ranked.
e) Choose wisely the websites you will comment or post: If that website/blog have bad reputation, You will get bad reputation too. So do it wisely! And some websites have in their script the tag "No follow", so They won't make as it is called 'Link Juice', is that, good reputation for your website. It is hard to know who has and who don't, but there are some plugins that can help You with that.
f) The most important part of this topic: DO NOT BE ABUSIVE! DO NOT SPAM. Read the text, make an opinion about it and then make your comment. Never do CTRL+C and CTRL+V from blog to blog. You will be saw as a sppamer and loose positions on raking instead of gain that.
